Tutor Description

The tutoring program uses volunteers to commit to supporting, guiding, and assisting our scholars with their academic work. By becoming part of the social network of adults and community members who care about the youth, tutors are able to help scholars develop positive academic strategies for better learning that will carry the scholar into their collegiate career.

Tutor Role:

* Support the mission, values and service goals of Boys Hope Girls Hope

* Provide academic support to all assigned scholars during shift

* Foster scholar academic growth by ensuring that scholars understand material

* Help to build scholar self-esteem and motivation

* Help set and work towards academic goals in subject areas

Participation Requirements:

* Be willing to adhere to Boys Hope Girls Hope policies and procedures

* Commit to tutoring weekly or as needed specified by the Community Resource Coordinator

* Be willing to communicate regularly with the Community Resource Coordinator regarding status and relationships with the scholars

* Document days/hours tutored

Desirable Qualities:

* Encouraging and supportive

* Patient and flexible

* Tolerant and respectful of others’ differences

* Specific or broad knowledge on high school level academics


* Personal fulfillment through valuable contributions to youth and your community

* Become an important figure in a learner’s life by helping scholars mature, progress and achieve academic goals

* On-going training and support to ensure successful tutoring

* Enhanced communication skills
